Supporting Money Management among Adults with Down Syndrome: A Multi-Technology Probe Study

Hailey L. Johnson, Heidi Spalitta, Callie Y. Kim, and Bilge Mutlu

CHI 2026 — ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems

We designed and prototyped three cashbased budgeting technology probes: a gamified tablet application, a tablet-based augmented reality application, and a custom tangible device. Seven AwDS used all three prototypes to complete simplified money management tasks. We built three different budgeting tools for adults with Down syndrome to try out: a game on a tablet, an app that overlays helpful information on top of real money using a camera, and a hands-on physical device. Seven adults with Down syndrome tested all three tools to practice managing money.

Accessible Technology for Adults with Down Syndrome: A Scoping Review

Hailey L. Johnson and Bilge Mutlu

ACM Transactions on Accessible Computing (TACCESS), 2025

We conducted a PRISMA scoping review on accessible technology for adults with Down syndrome. We included 20 papers and systematically answered four research questions. We searched through published research to find and analyze 20 studies about technology tools designed for adults with Down syndrome, identifying patterns and gaps in what's been built and studied.

SMART-TBI: Design and Evaluation of the Social Media Accessibility and Rehabilitation Toolkit for Users with Traumatic Brain Injury

Yaxin Hu, et al. (incl. Hailey L. Johnson)

ASSETS 2024 — ACM SIGACCESS Conference on Computers and Accessibility

We introduce SMART-TBI, a toolkit with five aids (Writing Aid, Interpretation Aid, Filter Mode, Focus Mode, and Facebook Customization) designed to address the cognitive and communicative needs of individuals with TBI. Eight users with moderate-severe TBI and five TBI rehabilitation experts evaluated each aid.We created SMART-TBI, a set of five tools to help people with brain injuries use social media more easily — a writing helper, a message interpreter, content filters, a focus tool, and Facebook settings. Eight people with brain injuries and five rehabilitation experts tried and gave feedback on each tool.

"It Is Easy Using My Apps:" Understanding Technology Use and Needs of Adults with Down Syndrome

Hailey L. Johnson, Audra Sterling, and Bilge Mutlu

CHI 2024 — ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems

We interviewed six adults with DS, seven parents of adults with DS, and three experts in speech-language pathology, special education, and occupational therapy to determine how technology could support adults with DS.We talked with six adults with Down syndrome, seven of their parents, and three specialists in speech, education, and therapy to understand how technology could better support adults with Down syndrome in their daily lives.

Investigating Day-to-day Experiences with Conversational Agents by Users with Traumatic Brain Injury

Yaxin Hu, et al. (incl. Hailey L. Johnson)

ASSETS 2023 — 25th International ACM SIGACCESS Conference on Computers and Accessibility

We gave nine adults with TBI an at-home conversation agent for four weeks to investigate use patterns, challenges, and design requirements, focusing particularly on injury-related use.We gave nine adults with brain injuries a voice assistant to use at home for four weeks, then studied how they used it, what was hard, and what would make it work better for people with their specific needs.

Technology Supports for Adults with Down Syndrome

    Hailey L. Johnson

ASSETS 2025 Doctoral Consortium — ACM SIGACCESS Conference on Computers and Accessibility

Doctoral consortium paper presenting research into how technology can support adults with Down syndrome in pursuing employment and personal goals, with a focus on designing age-appropriate, need-specific systems that reflect the abilities and interests of the population.A paper presenting my PhD research on how technology tools can help adults with Down syndrome reach their work and personal goals, by designing tools that fit their actual abilities and interests — not just what researchers assume they need.

AT@Work Workshop at ASSETS 2024 — ACM SIGACCESS Conference on Computers and Accessibility

A workshop examining how digital assistive technologies support workers with disabilities, addressing the "disability divide" in technological access and benefits, and bringing together stakeholders to advance vocational inclusion for people with disabilities.A workshop where researchers and practitioners discussed how technology tools can help people with disabilities access better job opportunities and close the gap in who benefits from assistive tech at work.
